Microsoft Edge proxy setup for office teams

Edge follows the system proxy, so office teams need a plan: system settings, an extension in a work profile, or a launch flag for quick tests.

On many company laptops, Microsoft Edge is the browser people open by default, so it is often where marketing, sales and e-commerce staff end up doing their market checks. Edge runs on the same Chromium engine as Chrome and handles proxies the same way: it has no proxy screen of its own. Its settings point you to Windows or macOS, and whatever you save there applies to every application on the machine.

That makes a little planning worthwhile. This guide sets out three ways to put Edge behind one of our proxies, who each one suits, and the checks and fixes a team lead or helpdesk should know.

Agree the approach with IT first

On managed laptops, IT may control proxy settings through device policy, block unapproved extensions or reset changes overnight. A short conversation up front avoids a setup that silently disappears. Bring three things: which staff need the proxy, which method you plan to use, and the proxy host so it can be allowed through any company firewall.

Three ways to proxy Edge

System proxy settingsEvery app on the computerA dedicated research machine
Extension in an Edge profileOne Edge profile onlyDaily client and market checks
Launch flagA single sessionQuick one-off tests

Whichever route you choose, the starting point is the same: the order's host, port, username and password, copied from your dashboard. Our proxies sign in with host:port plus that username and password. The method is the same for datacenter proxies and residential proxies.

Method A: system proxy settings

On Windows 11

  1. Click the three-dot Settings and more menu at the top right of Edge and open Settings.
  2. Choose System and performance from the sidebar.
  3. Select Open your computer's proxy settings, which takes you to the Windows Proxy page.
  4. In the Manual proxy setup section, press the Set up button for Use a proxy server and switch it on.
  5. Enter the host as the Proxy IP address and the port number as the Port, then select Save.
  6. Visit any site. Windows requests the proxy username and password with the first request; enter them to continue.

On macOS

  1. In Edge, open Settings, then System and performance, then Open your computer's proxy settings.
  2. macOS opens Network in System Settings. Pick the connection in use and press Details.
  3. Choose the Proxies tab, then tick Web Proxy (HTTP) together with Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS).
  4. Give both entries the host and port, then turn on Proxy server requires password and fill in the login.
  5. Confirm with OK and then Apply.

Everything on that computer now uses the proxy, including background updates, and that traffic counts towards your per-GB allowance.

Method B: an extension inside an Edge work profile

Edge profiles keep browsing data apart, and Edge accepts extensions from both the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store and the Chrome Web Store. Create a profile for the client or market, then:

  1. Add a reputable proxy manager extension that IT has approved.
  2. Add a new proxy entry with HTTP or HTTPS as the protocol, plus the host and port.
  3. Type the username and password into the extension's authentication fields.
  4. Save the entry and turn it on from the extension's toolbar icon.

Only that profile goes through the proxy, which keeps client checks separate from everyday work. An extension can see the traffic and credentials passing through it, so stick to well-known, maintained options.

Method C: a launch flag for one-off tests

To test a market without changing any saved setting, start Edge with the --proxy-server flag. On Windows:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --proxy-server="http://HOST:PORT"

And the macOS equivalent, run from Terminal:

open -a "Microsoft Edge" --args --proxy-server="http://HOST:PORT"

The flag has no room for a login, so Edge asks for the username and password when the first request goes out. Point --user-data-dir at an empty temporary folder to run the test in a separate session that leaves the normal profile alone.

A quick check before anyone relies on it

Open our IP checker in the proxied browser or profile. The address and location shown should be the proxy's. If the office address appears, the proxy has not taken effect, the login was rejected, or an extension has overridden the system setting.

Then load our DNS leak test in the same window. If your company's internet provider shows up as the resolver, the names of the sites being researched are still passing through the office network, and the setup needs another look.

Helpdesk notes: the usual problems

  • Edge keeps asking for credentials. The username or password is wrong or was not saved. Paste the username from the dashboard in full, including any region or session part.
  • ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED. Edge cannot reach the proxy at all: a value is mistyped, or the company firewall is stopping the connection. Check the values against the dashboard and test them in our proxy checker.
  • A few sites refuse the connection. Some services decline known datacenter ranges. Move that work to residential or mobile proxies, which use home broadband and carrier networks.
  • The proxy survives an uninstalled extension. The extension left a system setting behind. Turn the manual proxy off in the Windows or macOS settings.

Choosing the proxy type for Edge users

For browsing, desk research and general access, datacenter proxies cost the least per gigabyte of our four types. For sites that are strict about incoming traffic, or work that needs precise regional targeting, move up to residential premium proxies, our higher-trust residential tier. Each order is independent, so a team can hold one of each and keep both in the same dashboard. Compare the types on the proxies page and current rates on the pricing page.

As with any proxy use, keep to public information, respect each website's terms and follow the law that applies to your organisation.

Planning this for your team?

Compare the four proxy types, pick the one that fits the job and pay per GB. Credentials reach your dashboard as soon as payment clears.
