Tracking Canadian prices and ads: flyers, two languages and provincial tax
Canada looks like one market in a dashboard, but Quebec shoppers see French-first storefronts, sales tax depends on the province, and weekly flyers still steer grocery and pharmacy promotions. Teams that track Canadian prices, ads or listings get cleaner data when they plan around those differences instead of copying a US setup and swapping in Canadian IPs.
Retailers and the flyer habit
Canadian Tire, Loblaw banners such as Loblaws, No Frills and Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart, Costco and Amazon.ca shape much of the online price picture. Weekly flyers, gathered in apps like Flipp, often carry the promotions, so compare flyer prices with the same products' web prices.
Ads in English and French
Paid search and social run mainly through Google and Meta, and Quebec campaigns usually get separate French copy and landing pages. Ad verification should check both versions from Montreal as well as Toronto, because a French ad landing on an English page is exactly the mismatch these checks catch.
Pre-tax prices, by province
Listed prices usually exclude sales tax, and the tax differs by province: HST in Ontario, GST plus QST in Quebec, GST alone in Alberta. Record the province with each check and compare pre-tax prices, or a Calgary result will look cheaper than Toronto for the wrong reason.
Rules teams run into
Since 2022 the Competition Act treats drip pricing, adding mandatory fees after the headline price, as deceptive marketing; government taxes are excluded. CASL requires consent before commercial emails or texts, and Quebec's Charter of the French Language requires French in commercial publications.
