Monitoring the US market: marketplaces, retail media and sales tax
US online retail runs through a small group of marketplaces and big-box chains, and most of them now sell advertising on their own pages. A useful monitoring plan therefore covers organic listings and paid placements together. Prices appear before sales tax, local search shifts from metro to metro, and privacy rules differ by state. Brand, pricing and ad-ops teams usually start with retail media, paid search, marketplace sellers and the FTC's review rule.
Retail media beside organic results
Amazon Ads, Walmart Connect and Target's Roundel sell sponsored placements inside search results and product pages. Teams measuring share of shelf should log sponsored and organic positions separately, for the same query, at the same time and from the same metro.
Paid search beyond Google
Google handles most US searches, but Microsoft Advertising also serves ads on Bing, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo, so paid-search audits should cover both networks. Local packs and map results change from city to city, which is why checks in Chicago and Atlanta are worth running separately.
Third-party sellers and MAP
Many US brands publish minimum advertised price (MAP) policies, and breaches tend to surface among third-party sellers on Amazon and Walmart Marketplace. Capture the storefront name, advertised price and timestamp for each listing, and compare pre-tax figures, since sales tax is added at checkout and varies by state.
Rules worth knowing
The FTC's rule against fake and misleading reviews took effect in October 2024, which gives review monitoring real weight for brand teams. Privacy is regulated state by state, with California's CCPA as the usual reference point, so agree with legal which data fields a project may keep.
