Nigeria for brands and agencies: Jumia and Jiji, social selling and ARCON ad vetting
Adverts in Nigeria face a pre-approval rule that many foreign teams don't expect, run by ARCON, the advertising regulator, and shoppers' budgets track a moving naira. Selling happens on marketplaces such as Jumia and Konga, on the Jiji classifieds site and through Instagram pages and WhatsApp chats, mostly on phones.
Channels Nigerian shoppers use
Jumia and Konga sell across categories with pay-on-delivery options, Jiji carries cars, phones and property from private and business sellers, and Chowdeck and Glovo handle food delivery in Lagos and other cities. Many small brands sell mainly through Instagram, WhatsApp Business and TikTok.
Pidgin, local languages and influencers
Google Ads covers search, and Meta, TikTok and X carry social campaigns, often with influencers. Brands write adverts in Nigerian Pidgin as well as standard English, and in Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo for regional audiences, so each language version needs its own check from Nigerian IPs.
ARCON approval before exposure
Under the ARCON Act of 2022, adverts aimed at Nigerian audiences, including digital and social ones, must be vetted by the Advertising Standards Panel before they run. Keep approval references with each creative, and check that the version live in Nigeria matches the one that was approved.
What teams monitor, and data rules
Jumia and Konga prices before and during Black Friday, counterfeit listings on Jiji, and local results that differ between Lagos, Abuja and Kano. For outreach, the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 gives people the right to object to direct marketing at any time.
