The UK market in practice: comparison sites, grocer retail media and the DMCC Act
Google Shopping, price comparison sites and insurance aggregators give UK shoppers plenty of ways to compare, and the big grocers run advertising businesses of their own. Regulation has tightened too, with direct fines from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and new limits on food advertising, so monitoring now gathers evidence as well as prices.
Where prices are compared
Amazon.co.uk, eBay, Argos, Tesco, Currys and John Lewis are common benchmarks, and PriceRunner and PriceSpy aggregate retail prices. In financial services, Compare the Market, MoneySuperMarket, GoCompare and Confused.com rank insurance quotes, so insurers track where they appear.
Retail media from the grocers
Tesco sells advertising through dunnhumby and Sainsbury's through its Nectar loyalty business, alongside Amazon Ads, Google and Meta. Brand teams verify that sponsored placements appear where and when they were booked, from UK IPs and, for regional campaigns, from the relevant city.
Category rules for adverts
Since January 2026, UK law has restricted paid online adverts for less healthy food and drink, and the Advertising Standards Authority enforces the advertising codes more broadly. Food brands and their agencies use monitoring to confirm campaigns appear only where those rules and the client's own policies allow.
The DMCC Act and data rules
From April 2025 the CMA can fine businesses directly for consumer law breaches, and the DMCC Act bans fake reviews and drip pricing, where mandatory fees appear after the headline price. If monitoring feeds outreach, UK GDPR and PECR's consent rules for marketing emails and texts apply too.
