macOS proxy setup for agency and in-house marketing teams

Configure a proxy on a Mac through System Settings or Terminal, cover every network service your team uses, and verify the result before client work.

Plenty of agencies and in-house marketing teams work on Macs, and a system-level proxy is a tidy way to give a research Mac a presence in another market: browsers and most other apps pick it up without separate setup. This guide walks through System Settings, a Terminal method for configuring several Macs the same way, and the checks to run before the results go into a client report.

The setup is identical for datacenter proxies and residential proxies, so choose the type for the job and follow the same steps.

The detail that trips up Mac teams

macOS stores proxy settings per network service. Wi-Fi has its own, Ethernet has its own, and so does the adapter in a desk dock or USB hub. A MacBook that moves from Wi-Fi to a docking station switches service and, unless that service has the proxy too, starts sending traffic straight from the office connection. Set the proxy on every service the Mac uses, and include this in the team's setup notes.

Credentials to collect first

From your dashboard, note the host (an IP address or hostname), the port, the username and the password. Our proxies sign in with host:port and those credentials. Unlike Windows, macOS has proper fields for the login, so nobody needs to wait for a pop-up.

Configuring the proxy in System Settings

On macOS Ventura and later:

  1. Choose System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Open Network in the sidebar.
  3. Click the service to configure, for example Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and press Details.
  4. Go to the Proxies tab.
  5. Enable Web Proxy (HTTP). The host goes in Server and the port in the box beside it; then switch on Proxy server requires password and fill in the login.
  6. Do the same for Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), with identical details, so that encrypted sites are covered too.
  7. Press OK and then Apply.

Older Macs use System Preferences instead: open Network, select the connection, choose Advanced and then the Proxies tab. The fields match once you get there.

Running the Mac on SOCKS5

Every order also supports SOCKS5. To use it, enable SOCKS Proxy on that same tab, give it the host and port, and tick the password option to add the username and password. Leave the HTTP and HTTPS entries switched off, so that SOCKS carries everything.

Configuring several Macs from Terminal

For a team of Macs, a script is easier to repeat and audit than clicking through each one. macOS includes the networksetup command for this. To set an HTTP and HTTPS proxy on the Wi-Fi service:

networksetup -setwebproxy "Wi-Fi" HOST PORT on USERNAME PASSWORD
networksetup -setsecurewebproxy "Wi-Fi" HOST PORT on USERNAME PASSWORD

The on after the port turns authentication on, and the username and password follow it. To remove the proxy from that service later:

networksetup -setwebproxystate "Wi-Fi" off
networksetup -setsecurewebproxystate "Wi-Fi" off

Swap "Wi-Fi" for the exact service name on each Mac; networksetup -listallnetworkservices prints the full list, including dock adapters. One caution for shared machines: a password typed on the command line can stay in the Terminal history. Where Macs sit in one office, IP-whitelist authentication from the dashboard avoids storing it at all.

Check the result before client work

Open our IP checker in a browser. The page should report the proxy's address and its location, not the office's. If the office IP shows, the login may have been refused, the proxy may be on a different service from the one in use, or the setting did not save.

After that, load the DNS leak test. A Mac can route pages through the proxy while sending DNS lookups the normal way, so the office provider still sees which sites were researched. If that provider's resolvers appear, a SOCKS proxy with remote resolution or custom DNS settings will help.

Issues Mac users report

  • Login failures: check the username and password against the dashboard. Usernames often carry a region or session part, so paste rather than type.
  • The proxy works at home but not at the desk: the dock's network service has no proxy. Configure it there as well.
  • A message that the proxy server cannot be found or reached: a value is mistyped, or your network cannot get to the endpoint. Compare the values with the dashboard and run them through our proxy checker.
  • Specific sites refuse the connection: some services reject datacenter ranges. Use residential or mobile proxies for that work; their addresses belong to home broadband and mobile carriers.
  • One app ignores the proxy: not every Mac app reads the system setting. Enter the proxy in that app's own preferences where it allows.

Choosing the type and planning spend

For general browsing, desk research and light regional access, datacenter proxies keep the per-GB cost lowest. For sites with strict traffic filtering or work that needs precise regional targeting, try residential premium proxies, our higher-trust residential tier. The proxies overview compares all four types and the pricing page shows current rates. Since a system-wide proxy carries every app's traffic, pause cloud sync and large downloads on research Macs to keep data use in check.

Use the setup for legitimate research on public pages, in line with each site's terms and the law that applies to you.
