German pricing and ad checks: comparison portals, unit prices and warning letters
Many German shoppers check comparison portals such as idealo before they buy, and German law dictates how prices must be shown, down to a unit price per kilo or litre. Competitors also enforce advertising rules themselves through warning letters. That makes portal rankings, unit prices and the exact wording of price claims worth monitoring.
Shops and comparison portals
Otto, Zalando, MediaMarkt and Saturn, Kaufland, Lidl and the drugstore chain dm sell directly, while comparison portals such as idealo and Geizhals rank offers by price. A retailer's position on those portals is worth tracking alongside its own site, especially for electronics and household goods.
Search, ads and resale platforms
Search and paid search centre on Google, with Microsoft Advertising, Meta and Amazon Ads alongside. Brand-protection teams also watch eBay and Kleinanzeigen, the classifieds site formerly called eBay Kleinanzeigen, for counterfeit goods and grey-market imports aimed at German buyers.
Two prices on one product
Germany's price indication rules (PAngV) require total prices including VAT and, for goods sold by weight or volume, a unit price per kilo or litre. Grocery and drugstore monitoring should capture both, because a smaller pack can raise the unit price while the shelf price stays put.
Warning letters and data rules
Under the Unfair Competition Act (UWG), competitors and associations can send an Abmahnung, a formal warning letter, over misleading advertising. Data protection follows the GDPR, supervised separately in each federal state, so a project's data plan should be cleared before collection starts.
