More and more brands run a Discord server: for a product community, for beta feedback, for a game launch or for customer support. The people looking after those servers, community managers and moderators, sometimes need Discord on a proxy, for example to keep a consistent connection for brand work or to keep their home address out of it. The catch is that Discord has no proxy setting of its own. The app uses whatever the operating system or browser provides.
That leaves two dependable routes: the Discord web app in a dedicated browser profile, or a system-wide proxy that the desktop client follows. This guide covers both on Windows and macOS, plus the checks to run afterwards.
Decide the scope first
| Approach | What uses the proxy | How the login is handled |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated browser profile | Discord in that profile only | Username and password inside the proxy extension |
| Windows system proxy | Every app, including the Discord desktop client | IP whitelist, because Windows has no login fields |
| macOS system proxy | Every app, including the Discord desktop client | Username and password in System Settings |
Copy the host, port, username and password for your order from the Cheapest Proxies dashboard before you begin.
Recommended for community teams: a dedicated browser profile
Keeping Discord in its own browser profile means the proxy touches nothing else, and each moderator's everyday browsing stays on the normal connection.
- In Chrome, Edge or another Chromium-based browser, add a new profile and name it for the community.
- Install a reputable proxy extension in that profile, one that supports username and password login.
- Create a proxy entry with
HOST:PORTand add the credentials. - Switch the entry on and sign in to the Discord web app in this profile only.
System-wide on Windows
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → Proxy.
- Next to Use a proxy server, in the Manual proxy setup area, click Set up and turn the proxy on.
- Put the host under Proxy IP address and the port under Port, then choose Save.
The desktop client and browsers pick up this setting. Because the Windows screen has no place for a username and password, add the computer's public IP address to the whitelist in the dashboard, or use the browser-profile route above.
System-wide on macOS
- Open System Settings → Network.
- Choose the active connection and click Details.
- Go to the Proxies tab.
- Enable Web Proxy (HTTP) as well as Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), filling in the same server and port for both, and switch on Proxy server requires password to store the login.
- Confirm with OK and Apply.
Here the login is stored by macOS itself, so a login-based order works without any extra tool.
Text and moderation, yes; voice, no
Discord voice runs over UDP for real-time audio, while HTTP and HTTPS proxies carry TCP web traffic. A proxy set up as above handles the web app, sign-ins, messages and moderation tools, but it is not designed to carry voice streams. If a community manager mainly needs text and moderation through a specific connection, this setup fits. Voice routing is a different networking problem that a standard HTTP proxy does not solve.
Proving the route before moderators sign in
In the proxied browser or on the proxied computer, open our What is my IP tool and confirm it shows the proxy's exit address. The proxy checker confirms the endpoint responds, and the DNS leak test shows whether name lookups stay inside the proxy. To test the credentials away from any app or browser, run:
curl -x "http://USER:PASS@HOST:PORT" https://api.ipify.orgWhen this returns the proxy's address, the login is fine and any remaining problem sits in the browser or system configuration.
Choosing the proxy type
For responsive text and moderation work, a datacenter proxy keeps delay low and costs the least per gigabyte of our four types. If the work needs an address from a home broadband provider, pick a residential proxy or a residential premium proxy and allow for slightly more delay. Rates for all four are on the pricing page.
Community rules come first
Each moderator should use their own account, on the community's legitimate business. A proxy is never a way back onto Discord after a ban, a tool for self-bots or other automation the platform forbids, or a means of creating accounts in bulk; each of those breaches Discord's Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. Misuse puts the brand's server at risk and damages the reputation of the addresses involved.
Removing the proxy
On Windows, return to Settings → Network & internet → Proxy and switch Use a proxy server off. On macOS, reopen the Proxies tab, turn off the HTTP and HTTPS entries and press Apply. With the browser-profile approach, turn the extension off or stop using that profile.
