Rotating vs Sticky Sessions: Matching the Mode to the Workflow
Once a team has chosen a proxy type, one setting still shapes every job: whether the IP rotates with each request or sticks with one address for a few minutes. The two modes share one pool. Get it right and a price-tracking run finishes cleanly; get it wrong and a login drops halfway through an account review.
Below, common workflows are matched to a mode first, then the modes are compared. How rotating proxies work explains rotation in depth, and what is a sticky session does the same for sticky. Whichever you use, stay within each site’s terms of service.
We write these guides for e-commerce, marketing and agency teams that pay for proxies by the gigabyte.
Which mode each workflow needs
- Rotating for high-volume, read-only jobs: price monitoring, SEO rank tracking and any run of pages that don’t depend on each other. A new IP per request spreads the load and copes with volume efficiently.
- Sticky when a job has to stay in one piece: a sign-in followed by browsing, a form spread over several pages, or a company account run from one steady address within the platform’s terms.
A useful test: does the task carry a login or session from one request to the next? If yes, use sticky; if no, rotate.
How the two modes behave
Behind a single gateway, a rotating proxy draws on a large pool and assigns a different IP to each request, or switches on a short timer. With requests spread over many addresses, each IP handles only a modest share, which looks like naturally distributed traffic and keeps the job within reasonable rate limits.
A sticky session keeps one IP for a window you set, typically 1 to 30 minutes, so every request in that stretch appears to come from the same visitor. When the window closes a new IP takes over, and you can open a new session at any time.
Rotating and sticky compared
The table sums up the difference. Rotation is built for stateless work, where each request stands alone; sticky sessions are built for stateful work that keeps a login or session alive across page loads.
| Aspect | Rotating | Sticky |
|---|---|---|
| IP changes | With each request or on a short timer | Held 1–30 minutes |
| Suits | Stateless, independent requests | Stateful, multi-step flows |
| Team example | Price monitoring, rank checks | Sign in then browse, checkout tests |
| Strength | Spreads activity across the pool | Continuity across page loads |
| Account work | Less suitable | Preferred, within platform terms |
Why many teams run both
Plenty of teams use both modes: rotation for the broad monitoring, sticky for the few journeys that need a session. An e-commerce team might rotate through competitor catalogue pages every day while holding a sticky IP to test its own checkout in another market.
For account work, remember that neither mode can promise how a platform treats an account; its terms apply in every case.
Switching modes in your plan
Neither mode costs extra. On the datacenter, residential and mobile tiers you flip between per-request and sticky in the dashboard as workflows change. Billing stays per gigabyte from $3.50/GB: size the data on the proxy calculator, read the pricing page, or buy now.
Match the pool to the workflow
Every pool is billed per GB and run from the same dashboard, so one team can keep low-cost volume work and high-trust checks side by side.
High-volume collection from unprotected sites, automation, SEO tools
Market research, ad verification and geo-accurate checks on protected sites
Phone-first platforms, app and mobile ad testing
Hard targets where every failed request is costly
Covering several markets in one report? MIX packages combine multi-country residential traffic in a single order. Agencies buying on behalf of clients can apply for the reseller programme.

-
1
Size the job
Pick a proxy type in the proxy calculator and enter the gigabytes you expect to use to see the order total.
-
2
Order and pay
Choose the pool on the proxies page and pay by card through Stripe or in crypto through Cryptomus. Each order is billed per GB and does not renew on its own.
-
3
Share access
Credentials appear in the dashboard as soon as payment clears. Add them to each tool with a login or an IP whitelist, then send one test request before the real job starts.
