What Are Residential Proxies? When a Team Needs Home IPs

C By Cheapest Proxies team Updated

Residential proxies are the pool teams buy when a result has to match what a real customer sees: a local search page, a regional price, an ad as a household in another country receives it. Each request leaves through an address issued to a real home by a consumer internet provider (Comcast, BT and Deutsche Telekom are examples), so websites treat the visit as ordinary home traffic.

Below: the workflows that justify the cost, the path a request takes, the two ways to run the pool, and how residential compares with datacenter proxies. All of it applies to legitimate business work, within each site's terms of service and the law that applies to you.

Workflows that justify the cost

Residential IPs pay their way in two situations: when the team must see exactly what a visitor in one place sees, and when a site's bot-mitigation is wary of datacenter ranges. In practice, that means:

  • Price and market research — public pricing and product data, gathered within each site's terms.
  • Ad verification — checking that creatives reach real households in every target market.
  • SEO and SERP monitoring — rankings as searchers in different cities and countries see them.
  • Brand protection — spotting counterfeit listings and trademark misuse on regional marketplaces.
  • Localisation QA — confirming that a regional site or app works as intended for local users.
  • Business accounts — several legitimate accounts, each run within the platform's terms.

Where a site barely defends itself and the job is bulk public data, datacenter proxies usually give better value. For the hardest targets, Residential Premium lifts the success rate.

From your tool to the site and back

Three hops replace one. The tool (browser, scraper or app) connects to our gateway; the gateway sends the request out over a residential address; the site replies to that address, and the answer comes back to you. Your own IP never appears in the exchange.

That address also carries an ASN, the identifier of the network that owns it, and for a residential IP the owner is a consumer ISP. Fraud systems give this a lot of weight, trusting a familiar home provider more than a hosting company. Responsible pools, ours among them, only use a connection with the consent of the person it belongs to, under a clear agreement.

Rotating or holding an address

Rotating

Each request, or each few minutes of work, gets a different household IP. That suits independent, read-only tasks like SEO rank tracking or price monitoring. How rotating proxies work explains the mechanism.

Sticky sessions

One household IP stays assigned for a set time, usually 1–30 minutes. A task with several steps, like signing in, moving between pages or submitting a form, then comes from one consistent visitor, just as it would for a person on a single connection.

Where residential sits among the pools

On trust, residential ranks above low-cost datacenter IPs and below the premium and mobile tiers. For a closer two-way comparison, see datacenter vs residential.

Residential against the other proxy types
Proxy type IP source Trust Speed Typical price/GB Typical team use
Datacenter Cloud and hosting ranges Lower Very fast from $3.50 High-volume collection from unprotected sites, automation, SEO tools
Residential Household lines from consumer ISPs High Medium from $3.99 Market research, ad verification and geo-accurate checks on protected sites
Mobile (4G/5G) 4G/5G carrier networks Very high Medium from $4.50 Phone-first platforms, app and mobile ad testing
Residential Premium Curated pool of real-user IPs Very high High from $6.50 Hard targets where every failed request is costly

Buying residential for a team

Billing is per gigabyte, pay-as-you-go. Each order stays valid for 30 days and is never renewed automatically, which keeps the purchase simple for finance. Rates start at $3.99/GB, HTTP/HTTPS and SOCKS5 are both supported, and access works by username/password or IP whitelist.

Estimate the spend in the proxy calculator, set it against the other tiers on the pricing page, or place an order in a minute. Delivery is instant, across 55+ countries.

Match the pool to the workflow

Every pool is billed per GB and run from the same dashboard, so one team can keep low-cost volume work and high-trust checks side by side.

Covering several markets in one report? MIX packages combine multi-country residential traffic in a single order. Agencies buying on behalf of clients can apply for the reseller programme.

Questions team leads ask
