What teams use Appen proxies for

These are services companies deal with day to day, from review sites to cloud platforms. The proxy work is usually a check of what customers or users in another market are shown, inside each service's terms.

▸ Rating search results for one market
▸ Region-gated ads evaluation
▸ Transcribing and labelling local media
▸ Reviewing web content as local users see it

Buying localised data from Appen: how project teams check the market view

Product and localisation teams hire Appen when they need judgments from people in particular markets, such as search relevance, ad quality or transcription. Jobs can be limited to chosen countries, and Appen works out where each contributor is from the IP address they connect with. Your team's share of the work is making sure the pages you send look right in each market, then auditing samples of what comes back.

Decide which units need a market view

Audio transcription and text classification look the same from any country, so they need no proxy at all. Units built on live search results, ads or retail listings change by market, and those are the ones your reviewers should open through an exit in the job's target country.

Audit samples against the live local page

When results arrive, pull a sample of judgments per market and reopen the same URLs from that country. Where a rater's answer and the page disagree, check the timestamp first, because listings and ads change; persistent mismatches belong in your quality conversation with Appen.

Keep your team on the customer side

Contributor accounts on CrowdGen, Appen's contributor platform, are for people doing the work, and the country filters on your jobs rely on contributors' genuine locations. Staff should review jobs from your customer account, never by joining the crowd through a proxy in a target market.

Plan choice and setup

Match the geography settings on your jobs with residential exits targeted by country; per-GB billing keeps a sampling audit modest, because most units are ordinary web pages. Video-heavy units cost more to review. Keep one shared list mapping each job to its countries so every reviewer uses the same exits.

The plan we suggest for Appen

We suggest Residential here. Traffic leaves through household broadband connections in the country you pick, so pages load as they would for an ordinary customer there. Locale projects on Appen and similar crowdwork platforms often require contributors to be in a particular country, and they check it by IP. A residential IP from a consumer ISP there matches a genuine local connection, while datacenter ranges get flagged or rejected outright. A proxy supports honest work from the right market and never replaces actually being eligible.

✓

Country-accurate IPs

Locale-gated search-relevance, ads-evaluation and transcription tasks are built around regional content, and they only load it for the right country. Pick residential IPs there, and treat the contributor terms for your assigned market as the rulebook.

✓

Sticky sessions for long tasks

Inside a rating queue or transcription batch, a sticky session keeps one IP from item to item, so the platform sees a steady home connection rather than an address that hops between tasks.

✓

Real-ISP trust

Addresses come from consumer ISPs rather than server ranges, so integrity checks see a household connection. That helps contributors who genuinely qualify; it is no substitute for eligibility.

✓

Standard auth and formats

A team lead can set up browser profiles or task tools before a shift starts, since credentials are issued instantly. They work over HTTP/HTTPS or SOCKS5, signed in with a password or from an allowlisted office IP.

Matching each job to a plan

Most teams run more than one kind of job. Data is bought per plan, so volume checks can sit on a lower-cost plan while the jobs that need a household or carrier connection get one.

Several markets, one order

MIX packages are ready-made residential pools covering several countries at once, so a multi-market report can run from a single order.

Getting the team set up

Four steps take a team from order to first check, using the browsers and tools it already works with.

1

Size the order

Start on Residential, the plan suggested above, and choose how many gigabytes the work needs. The proxy calculator shows the total first.

2

Pay by card or crypto

Stripe handles card payments and Cryptomus handles crypto. Each order is a one-off, valid for 30 days, with no subscription to cancel.

3

Set the market

Choose countries in the dashboard after payment, so one order can serve one client market this week and another the next. If a job needs a single city, ask support whether the network covers it.

4

Give the team access

The dashboard shows the login details once the payment has gone through. Pass them to the colleagues who need them, or whitelist the office IP so nobody has to type a password.

Rotation or a sticky session?

  • ▸Per-request rotation moves every request to a different IP. Use it for wide, read-only sweeps of public pages, such as price lists or search results.
  • ▸Sticky sessions hold one IP for a window you choose, typically 1-30 minutes, for signed-in or multi-step tasks such as stepping through a client's checkout.

Both are switched in the dashboard, and the options on offer depend on the plan. Keep request rates modest either way.

Signing in

  • ▸Username and password in the host:port:user:pass format that browsers, browser-profile tools and monitoring software accept.
  • ▸IP whitelist: add your office or server address in the dashboard, and anything connecting from it gets in without credentials, which suits shared office lines and scheduled jobs.

Both work over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5, and the protocol can be changed later in the dashboard at no extra charge.

Match the IP to the market you report on

Search rankings, prices, ads and even which products appear can change with the visitor's country. Set the IP to the market your client or campaign targets, and the screenshots and figures your team files will line up with what customers there are shown.

  • ✓55+ countries to choose from.
  • ✓City-level targeting where the network supports it.
  • ✓One country per check keeps month-on-month results comparable.

When a report doesn't match what the client sees on the ground, the IP's country is one of the first things to check.

How the four plans compare

Keeping Appen work within the rules

We sell these proxies for legitimate business work: market and price research, ad verification, SEO, brand protection, QA and compliant automation, including running your own accounts inside each platform's rules. Whatever your team does through them has to stay within the terms of service of every site involved and the law that applies to you and your clients.

  • ✓Collect only publicly available information, and pace requests so the site isn't put under strain.
  • ✓No proxy can promise that an account escapes action by the platform. That depends mostly on how the account is used and whether it follows the terms.
  • ✓Personal details in collected pages, such as names, contact details or reviews, bring data-protection duties with them. Agree with your legal team what you keep and for how long.

The full rules are in our acceptable use policy.

Appen proxies: questions from team leads

For public pages that your units reference, yes: viewing them from the job's market is ordinary quality control. Stay signed out of accounts on those sites and respect their terms of use. File screenshots under the job ID so every finding traces back to a unit.
Some units point at pages with names, photos or reviews by real people. Capture only what the audit needs, store screenshots under your data-protection policy with the same retention as the job data, and share them with Appen through your agreed channels rather than personal email.
No. Eligibility, identity and residency are Appen's decisions, and a proxy changes none of them. What it does is let traffic come from the country a project covers, which is one condition many locale tasks check, so use it only on projects you genuinely qualify for, under your contributor agreement.
It can if the proxy is used to misrepresent location, which may breach the platform's terms, and no proxy can promise against suspension. Honest use, meaning steady and region-correct access to projects you qualify for, looks like any home connection.
Use a sticky session, so the queue sees a steady IP rather than a new address on every request; that matches one contributor working from one desk, which is what it is. Rotation suits only read-only research with no account signed in.
Because it usually isn't a saving. Datacenter ASNs are commonly flagged on crowdwork platforms, and locale-sensitive content often renders wrongly behind them. These tasks expect real-ISP reputation in the target country, which residential IPs carry.

Refunds

Proxies that fail on arrival can be reported to support for up to 24 hours after delivery. Support swaps them, and where a working swap isn't possible, refunds the affected amount. Details are in the refund policy.

Support

People answer tickets 24/7. Open one from the Support page in your dashboard and include the order reference.

Logs

Our records cover billing and how much bandwidth each order used. The URLs, page content and destinations your team reaches are never logged.
