Web Scraping Proxies: Picking a Pool for Each Data Job

C By Cheapest Proxies team Updated

Business intelligence, SEO tracking, market research and price comparison share one raw material: publicly available web data, collected automatically. The team doing the collecting has two questions to answer before it picks a proxy. How hard does the target site defend itself? And how much data does the job need? This guide answers both, then covers rotation and the working habits that keep collection responsible.

The ground rule throughout: public data only, each site's terms of service and robots directives respected, and request rates kept modest. Proxies let a team gather business data within those limits; they never replace them.

We write these guides for e-commerce, marketing and agency teams that pay for proxies by the gigabyte.

Three kinds of target, three pools

Open sites → datacenter

Plenty of sources, from product catalogues and public APIs to news and RSS feeds, use little or no bot-mitigation. Datacenter proxies suit them: our lowest rate (from $3.50/GB), speeds up to 1 Gbps, and the high concurrency that large crawls need.

Protected sites → residential

Once a site's bot-mitigation starts treating server IPs with suspicion, switch that target to residential proxies, from $3.99/GB. Requests from home-ISP addresses look like ordinary visitors, which is also why the results come back geo-accurate.

Demanding sites → premium or mobile

Residential Premium raises the success rate on the hardest targets, and mobile IPs fit collection from platforms built for phones.

Scenario by scenario

The table matches common scraping scenarios with a pool and a rotation mode, weighing cost against success rate.

Pool and rotation by scraping scenario
Scenario Pool Rotation Reason
Open catalogues & APIs Datacenter Per-request Low cost and high speed at volume
Sites with bot-mitigation Residential Per-request or sticky Home-ISP IPs look like a normal visitor
Results for one location Residential Sticky Matches the city or country a user sees
Phone-first platforms Mobile (4G/5G) Carrier rotation Looks like a genuine cellular user
Hardest targets Residential Premium Sticky Higher success rate on demanding sites

Rotation keeps a crawl within reasonable limits

A crawl that sends thousands of requests from one address looks like a single visitor working at an impossible pace, and it hits rate limits fast. Rotating proxies share the requests out across many addresses, so each one carries only a small part of the load, as normal distributed traffic would. Rotate on every request for stateless jobs where each page is independent. Hold a sticky session when a multi-step flow, such as search, then results, then a detail page, must come from one steady IP.

A responsible-collection policy for the team

Treat sustainable scraping as written team policy rather than a one-off setting. Include these points:

  • Public data only, with each site's terms of service and robots directives respected.
  • Request rates throttled so the target's servers never carry undue load.
  • An honest crawler identity where appropriate, and cached results instead of refetching pages that have not changed.
  • The site's official API, whenever it offers one for the data you need.

The same habits reduce friction and the bandwidth bill, and they keep the team's collection legitimate and within each site's terms.

Tools, bandwidth and buying

Our proxies work over HTTP/HTTPS and SOCKS5, with sign-in by username/password or IP whitelist, so they fit the stacks data teams already use: Scrapy, Requests, Playwright, Puppeteer and Selenium. Headless browsers use far more bandwidth than plain HTTP requests, so model both on the proxy calculator before the budget is set.

Then compare tiers on the pricing page or buy now. The use case is covered in more depth on our proxies for scraping page.

Match the pool to the workflow

Every pool is billed per GB and run from the same dashboard, so one team can keep low-cost volume work and high-trust checks side by side.

Covering several markets in one report? MIX packages combine multi-country residential traffic in a single order. Agencies buying on behalf of clients can apply for the reseller programme.

  1. 1

    Size the job

Pick a proxy type in the proxy calculator and enter the gigabytes you expect to use to see the order total.

  2. 2

    Order and pay

Choose the pool on the proxies page and pay by card through Stripe or in crypto through Cryptomus. Each order is billed per GB and does not renew on its own.

  3. 3

    Share access

Credentials appear in the dashboard as soon as payment clears. Add them to each tool with a login or an IP whitelist, then send one test request before the real job starts.

Questions team leads ask

That depends on the target. Datacenter suits open sites because it costs less per GB and runs faster; move to residential for sites with bot-mitigation, or whenever results must be geo-accurate.
Yes, once a job goes past a few pages. Rotation shares requests among many IPs so that no single address sends too many, which keeps the crawl inside reasonable rate limits.
Gathering publicly available data is common practice, provided the team respects each website's terms of service and robots directives, keeps request rates modest and uses official APIs where they exist.
Yes. Any tool that accepts HTTP/HTTPS or SOCKS5 proxies will work, including Scrapy, Requests, Playwright, Puppeteer and Selenium, with sign-in by username/password or IP whitelist.
Use datacenter proxies wherever the target allows, cache results so nothing is downloaded twice, and skip the headless browser when a page does not need JavaScript rendering, since plain HTTP requests use less data.
