Free vs Paid Proxies: The Business Case

C By Cheapest Proxies team Updated

Free proxy lists are easy to find, and for a business the price is tempting. The real comparison, though, isn’t free against a few dollars per gigabyte. It is free against the hours your team spends rerunning failed jobs, the gaps in data a client report relies on, and the risk of sending company logins through a server nobody can vouch for.

Our own free proxy list exists for quick experiments where little is at stake, so this isn’t a case against free lists in general. Whichever you use, stay within each site’s terms of service and applicable law, and never route sensitive data through a proxy you can’t trust.

We write these guides for e-commerce, marketing and agency teams that pay for proxies by the gigabyte.

What free really costs a business

The same problems turn up again and again:

  • Reliability — public IPs come and go constantly, so a list that worked on Monday is often half dead by Tuesday.
  • Speed — crowded, unmanaged servers load pages slowly and time out in the middle of a job.
  • Privacy — an unknown operator could log or inspect what passes through, so logins and client data should never go near one.
  • Trust — heavily abused public IPs tend to carry poor reputations, which pulls down success rates on protected sites.
  • Support — when a job breaks the night before a deadline, there is nobody to call.

Why free lists behave this way

Most free proxies are one of two things: servers accidentally left open to the public, or services that cover their costs in ways they don’t always disclose. With an open proxy you have no idea who runs it or what happens to the traffic passing through.

For a team that handles client accounts or commercial data, that unknown is the core problem. Every drawback above traces back to it.

Free versus paid for recurring team work

The table sums it up. A free list can satisfy a one-off curiosity; recurring work that feeds reports or client deliverables needs a paid plan behind it.

Free lists and paid plans compared
What matters Free list Paid plan
Uptime Unpredictable 99.9% on every plan
Speed Slow, with frequent timeouts Fast, dedicated infrastructure
Privacy Unknown operator, may log traffic Clear no-logs policy
IP types Whatever happens to be open Datacenter, residential, mobile, premium
Support None 24/7 human support

What a paid plan gives your team

Paying takes those problems off the table. The IPs are managed and ethically sourced, spread across datacenter, residential and mobile tiers that run at 99.9% uptime. A clear no-logs policy covers privacy, connections run over HTTP/HTTPS or SOCKS5 to suit your tools, and when something breaks, 24/7 human support answers.

Just as important for a business, someone is accountable. There is a provider who answers for performance, keeps no record of your traffic, and issues an invoice for every completed order, ready for your finance team.

When free is enough, and when to pay

Use a free proxy for a one-off test where nobody minds if it is slow, insecure or offline; our free proxy list serves exactly that purpose. Switch to a paid plan once the job recurs, has a deadline or involves anything confidential.

Paid plans begin at $3.50/GB. Put the expected volume into the proxy calculator, read the tier rates on the pricing page, or buy now.

Match the pool to the workflow

Every pool is billed per GB and run from the same dashboard, so one team can keep low-cost volume work and high-trust checks side by side.

Covering several markets in one report? MIX packages combine multi-country residential traffic in a single order. Agencies buying on behalf of clients can apply for the reseller programme.

  1. 1

    Size the job

Pick a proxy type in the proxy calculator and enter the gigabytes you expect to use to see the order total.

  2. 2

    Order and pay

Choose the pool on the proxies page and pay by card through Stripe or in crypto through Cryptomus. Each order is billed per GB and does not renew on its own.

  3. 3

    Share access

Credentials appear in the dashboard as soon as payment clears. Add them to each tool with a login or an IP whitelist, then send one test request before the real job starts.

Questions team leads ask

Rarely. Many are misconfigured open servers run by people you cannot identify, who could log or read the traffic. Keep logins, client data and anything confidential off them, and treat them as disposable.
An accountable provider. A paid plan brings dependable uptime on fast dedicated infrastructure, managed IPs, human support and a clear no-logs policy, and someone answers for performance and privacy. A free list offers none of that.
Yes, for one quick test where it does not matter if the proxy is slow, insecure or offline. That is the reason we publish a free list. Recurring or confidential work belongs on a paid plan.
Datacenter starts at $3.50/GB, and each order is paid once and stays valid for a fixed 30 days. You can pay by card through Stripe or in cryptocurrency, and every completed order has an invoice to download from the dashboard.
No. We keep billing records and aggregate bandwidth figures only. The sites your team visits, the content it loads and where requests go are never recorded.
