How to Reduce CAPTCHAs When Your Team Collects Web Data
A CAPTCHA appears when a website wants to confirm that a person is on the other end, usually because the traffic arriving looks unusual: too many requests in a short time, or an IP with a poor reputation. For a team collecting publicly available data, every challenge has a cost. Runs stall, datasets arrive with gaps and someone has to rerun the job. Frequent challenges rarely mean the data is off-limits; far more often, the collection setup needs adjusting.
Below: why challenges appear, and how pacing, clean residential IPs and a few team habits bring them down. The aim is collection that is reliable and respectful, carried out within each site's terms of service and applicable law. It is never about getting around protections a site has chosen to run, and no proxy can promise a run without challenges.
We write these guides for e-commerce, marketing and agency teams that pay for proxies by the gigabyte.
What triggers a challenge
In data collection, two things account for most challenges:
- Request rate. A burst of requests from one IP resembles a single visitor behaving unusually, and rate-based checks respond to it.
- IP reputation. Networks with a record of abusive traffic, some datacenter ranges among them, start with less trust, so sites challenge their addresses sooner.
Fix both and challenges fall, because your traffic then stays within what a site expects from ordinary visitors spread across many connections.
Start with clean IPs
Residential proxies send requests through real home connections, which earn more trust than typical server ranges and tend to meet fewer challenges on protected sites. Where a target stays difficult, Residential Premium offers a curated pool of higher-quality IPs. Our residential and mobile IPs are sourced ethically, with consent, which helps keep pool quality high.
Combine clean IPs with rotation so every address handles only a small share of the requests. Of all the settings your team controls, this one does the most to keep traffic inside reasonable rate limits.
Changes that cut challenges
Each adjustment in the table either lowers the load your collection places on a site or matches the IP type and location to that site and its audience. None of them defeats a protection, and none is meant to.
| Adjustment | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Slower request rate | Fewer rate-based checks | Random pauses, capped concurrency |
| Rotation across many IPs | Small share of traffic per IP | Per-request for standalone pages |
| Residential or premium IPs | More trust per IP | Ethically sourced pools |
| IP in the content’s region | Requests fit the audience | Fewer location mismatches |
| Cached results | Less repeat traffic | Unchanged pages are skipped |
Pacing and session habits for your collectors
IP choice is half the answer. The other half is how the collectors behave:
- Lower the pace and randomise the pauses between requests, and cap concurrency so the site never carries an undue load.
- Use IPs from the region the content is published for.
- Hold one IP through multi-step flows with sticky sessions, instead of changing address part-way.
- Cache what you have collected, so unchanged pages are not requested again.
When a site keeps challenging despite all this, read it as a request to slow down further or to use the site's official API, not as an obstacle to work around.
Putting it into practice
Both residential and premium plans come with HTTP/HTTPS and SOCKS5, username/password or IP-whitelist authentication and 55+ countries, delivered instantly. When runs are completing cleanly, size the ongoing workload on the proxy calculator, look up per-GB rates on the pricing page and buy proxies for the next phase. The end-to-end process is set out in how to scrape a website.
Match the pool to the workflow
Every pool is billed per GB and run from the same dashboard, so one team can keep low-cost volume work and high-trust checks side by side.
High-volume collection from unprotected sites, automation, SEO tools
Market research, ad verification and geo-accurate checks on protected sites
Phone-first platforms, app and mobile ad testing
Hard targets where every failed request is costly
Covering several markets in one report? MIX packages combine multi-country residential traffic in a single order. Agencies buying on behalf of clients can apply for the reseller programme.

1
Size the job
Pick a proxy type in the proxy calculator and enter the gigabytes you expect to use to see the order total.
-
2
Order and pay
Choose the pool on the proxies page and pay by card through Stripe or in crypto through Cryptomus. Each order is billed per GB and does not renew on its own.
-
3
Share access
Credentials appear in the dashboard as soon as payment clears. Add them to each tool with a login or an IP whitelist, then send one test request before the real job starts.
